    Bats are a symbol of prosperity in Japan and China because the pronunciation of bat in Chinese (fu) is the same as the word fortune (also fu). In Japan, the kanji for well, written 井, is also a symbol of prosperity and good luck. So this particular design is a very lucky design, with two different symbols for prosperity and good fortune, drawn many times.

    This stencil features a rare motif of horses, probably for a boy or man’s kimono. Although somewhat moth eaten, the design is undisturbed. This stencil uses sewn-in thread and was probably used for surizome.
