Cranes and pines are a popular motif in Japanese textiles, symbolizing longevity and prosperity. This stencil uses no reinforcement and it looks like it was used for surizome with the black ink rubbed on one face. I’ve traced the image as a vector and have a simple representation of what the pattern would have looked like for surizome or katazome.
