Some of these books don’t have ISBN numbers, especially the mook publications and journals. In this case, I have provided a link to the best available information, usually CiNii or Kosho.
- 日本の手わざ 長板中形 – This book details the work process of Shimizu Kotaro, an indigo katazome dyer who was also a living national treasure
- 型染・引き染の基本 – This book by Seiju Yamazaki covers basic stencil dyeing with a brush, or hikizome
- 草木染型染の色 – Google Books – This book by Seiju Yamazaki covers different stencil dyeing color combinations, their history, and gives recipes for how to reproduce them with plant dyes
- 技法叢書 紅型染め – This book details the dyeing process of bingata and also has many stencils to copy in the back. It also contains patterns for Okinawan garments.
- 季刊染織と生活14号 特集=日本の小紋染 – This is publication that interviewed komon dyers in the mid seventies. It also contains an article about the history of katazome and how it was developed.
- Katazome / National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo – This is an exhibition book from the 1980s when there was a huge katazome exhibition in Tokyo. It contains a write up on the history of katazome and stencil paper, as well as beautiful modern pieces.
- Japanese Stencil Dyeing – This is a fantastic book by Eiko Nakano on how to stencil dye. It’s still relevant today, although I would personally avoid some of the harsher pigments and chemical dyes.
- Katazome Book – This is a book by a modern indigo dyer in Japan. The pictures are excellent and the aesthetic is lovely.
- ほこらしや浦添型 沖縄染色・紅型のルーツを求めて – This book discusses the history of Okinawan stencil dyeing and talks about their konjac print paste technology, and details a historical stencil dyeing restoration project.
- 型染・小紋・中型 = Katazome, komon, chūgata – This book discusses the history of katazome and gives beatiful historical examples.
- 染めの型紙 (日本の美術 No.343) – This is a magazine issue that talks about katazome, komon, ito-ire process pictures, and more.
